New Jersey’s Deadliest Highways in 2016

According to a study of data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Highway Administration on the safety of highways in the U.S., in New Jersey, highway deaths increased in 2016 from 2015, a statistic that experts blamed on there being more traffic on the road.

Surprisingly, the deadliest highways in 2016 were not the busiest highways in the state, nor were they the ones that made the list in 2015. Instead, many that were on the list this year were the smaller state highways in more rural areas and those highways with side streets that made traffic patterns more complicated and more difficult to navigate.

Compiled from New Jersey’s State Department of Transportation and state police crash statistics, the Garden State Parkway was the most dangerous highway in 2016. Rounding out the list, in order of most safe to least safe, are the following:

2016: 5 fatalities

2015: 3 fatalities

#18 (tie): Route 22

2016: 6 fatalities

2015: 7 fatalities
